Ahh January, the month of fresh starts and new beginnings (some that last longer than others of course…). But there’s something we love about this time of year, when we get to close the door on the previous year, look to what lies ahead and enjoy a good old sort out.
Maybe it’s because we’re stuck indoors more, maybe it’s the yearly ritual of taking the decorations down and re-evaluating the space in our homes. Or maybe it’s the promise of a new year ahead of purpose and positivity.
But there’s something so good about getting organised.
And whilst kitchen cupboards, under stairs hideouts and wardrobes get most of the limelight, we wanted to share some of our favourite ideas for decluttering the lesser focused on areas of your home this January (or any other month for that matter!)
Declutter the desk
Whether working at home or away, a tidy desk is good for the mind. And whilst the temptation is (always) to buy more stationary, decluttering and streamlining to create a beautiful looking space will do a world of good. Clear loose paperwork away in desk boxes, files and folders. Add a letter rack for incoming notes and post. Make sure you can always find a pen with a classic pen pot, pop essentials away at the end of the day with a desk tidy and keep everything looking just as good on the go with a matching portfolio.
And personalising with a name, contents or message will add meaning, purpose and longevity.
Simplify the sentimental
Hands up if most of your most treasured photographs, memories and keepsakes are hiding away in a computer file, or tucked away in the loft or at the top of the wardrobe never to be seen again? Instead, why not create space in your home to quickly and easily access all those things that remind you of something special with these leather boxes. Not only do they offer practical storage space but they’re statement pieces for your home that can be used as side tables at the same time. And why not personalise them too with a leather tag to remember what’s inside.
Store jewellery in style
Create a home for all your sparkly things and a safe place for all your favourite pieces. Instead of lots of individual boxes, try condensing your collection to just a couple of matching jewellery boxes. With small boxes for rings and earrings to sit on your bedside table. A larger box with space for treasured necklaces, chains, bracelets and watches. And a matching box for his ever-increasing collection too.
Organise the hallway
A prime zone for clutter and disorganisation – especially with kids or teens in the house - and even more so in winter with all the extra hats, scarves and gloves about. Use baskets and boxes for streamlined simple storage, or for transporting and keeping kindling and logs for the fire. Hang leads, bags and handy items like shoe horns on wall mounted hooks, use stick stands for brollies and walking sticks, and capture the contents of pockets in a leather coin tray.
And as we bid farewell to the season of excess, welcome in the start of another new year with a bit more simplicity.
Because whether you’re embracing a new resolution or looking for inspiration to battle those January blues - a good dose of decluttering and organising is the perfect way to enjoy all the lovely things you already have in your home.
